Informations
Ethical Tour
While living with the Mentawai tribe, you must accept their living conditions. This isn’t a special place, like simple beds. We only sleep on the floor with mats and mosquito nets, which will also serve as a changing room (not for changing wet clothes).
You must accept the conditions and circumstances while living with them, understand their simplicity, appreciate and respect their hospitality while staying with the tribe. Avoid offending them by using harsh words, negative language, or disturbing their comfort.
You must also understand that life there is remote and isolated. Access to the tribe requires time and effort, as the journey is muddy and slippery, and the road is uneven and winding. They also have to cut down trees to support the muddy and slippery paths.
Please note that none of the places we will visit have electricity. There are only solar panels provided by the government, which are used only for lighting at night. So, before you depart, you must prepare spare batteries or a power bank to charge your camera or cell phone. This means there is no electricity.
Please be aware that your mental preparation will be tested by the conditions and circumstances of this trip. You must be able to adapt to the conditions and circumstances while living with the Mentawai tribe.
We will arrange all of these tours. Before you begin this trip, remember to obtain good information, such as about tribal life and forest culture, and other matters. Furthermore, your guide will provide some briefings.
The weather is hot and humid throughout the year. The dry season usually runs from May to early September, although sporadic rain may occur during this period. Rainfall is abundant between November and January. The average temperature is 27–33°C on Siberut Island. Be prepared for hot, humid, and windy conditions.
There are also important things to know
- While living with the Mentawai people. Don’t assume that life there is the same as modern life.
- Try to share with each other, which means staying connected with the local community.
- Enjoy your time with them and be fully present during the experience, and they will appreciate your time spent with them.
- In this modern era, they may sometimes think that bringing a camera or smartphone will be used for negative purposes. Therefore, we recommend asking their permission before taking photos, drawings, or paintings inside from the house((UMA)
Prohibitions you need to know while living with a tribe :
- Don’t do anything strange or speak rudely to them, as they dislike rudeness.
- Don’t disturb their comfort.
- Avoid personal issues with the Mentawai people.
Be a good observer, don’t judge one another, and don’t force yourself to influence their lives, leading to richer, more modern things.
